By the time Hyden returned to his new house, it was long past sunset, but that didn’t matter. He’d wanted Oakley off the track out from the cabin before dark because it was rough and unlit, but the rest of the route home was on proper paved roads so light was irrelevant.

He walked out into his field and moved the goat’s tether to a new area so it would have fresh grass to eat and refilled its water trough. The trough was on wheels so he could move it around, but it had a brake as well to prevent the goat from playing with it.

Then he unpacked the mountain of dirty laundry he’d brought from the cabin and put the first load of sheets and pillowcases into the washing machine. Finally he sat down with his legal pad and laptop to finish typing in his notes.

Hyden pulled up the first file on his computer and stared at the screen. Prince had set up several spreadsheets, all color-coded by segment of the job to be done. The glazier’s tasks were blue, the gardener’s green, and so on. Hyden could see progress at a glance. Not that there was any progress yet, but it would be so easy to add the dates various stages needed to be done across the top of the sheet and color in each box as it was completed.

It didn’t take him nearly as long as he’d expected to add in the rest of the data and then to pull up his brand-new letterhead paper he’d designed himself. He made “Hyden Carmichael Bubble Houses” a much smaller font, adding in a tiny DBA and “My Glasshouse Home” in much bigger print, and then saved it as his new template.

He’d already planned the orders he needed to send out. First to Oakley to level the area where the new house would sit and then to grade a place to use as a small parking lot for the business. For the time being his house would also be his office. But once the display house was completed he’d use it as his office as well as his showroom.

Next was the delivery of the kit house and then all the work on the inside to customize it. He needed to get that right. It’d be crazy to get nice new flooring in and have workmen stomping their filthy boots all over it to finish off the bathrooms or something. But the glass house could be started before the interior of the display house was finished and initial garden work could begin earlier, too.

Hyden pulled up Prince’s spreadsheet. This was going to help him get everything done in the correct order. It was more complicated than it might appear because some things absolutely needed to happen before others, but other timelines were more fluid.

This was what he wanted. Hyden wiggled happily. A job that engaged his brain, made him work hard, but where no one was deliberately torpedoing the results.
